SUMMARY:Sevilla 2020 Training School on Soil Organic Matter and Fire
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n1st European FIRElinks Training School\n“What does fire to Soil Organic Matter? Chemical and physical characterization of pyrogenic organic matter and its impact on soil functions”\nMarch 29 – April 3\, 2020\, Seville\, Spain \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Vegetation fires are part of our world since geological times. Although they are devastating\, they offer changes for renewal of ecological systems and landscapes. Emitting huge amounts of greenhouse gases\, charcoal residues can – after their incorporated into the soils – increase the C-sequestration potential of soils. These are only a few of the many contradicting aspects of vegetation\nfires that have to be understood for a comprehensive analysis of the impact of fire in a world affected by global change.\nAs a start\, the intention of the present course is to discuss the effects on fire on the system “soil” and to obtain insights into some powerful analytical tool presently available for its characterization.\nBased on this\, the objective of this training course is the introduction of PhD students and post-Docs \ni) into typical methods for characterizing soil properties and soil microbial activities\nii) into modern analytical tools such as spectroscopic (NMR; FTIR\, IRMS) or microscopic techniques (TEM\, NMR-micro imaging) \nboth within lectures given by experts and practical work in the lab and in the field. \nImportant deadlines:\n15/02/2020: Abstract submission\n03/03/2020: Notification of Acceptance\n15/03/2020: Deadline for payment \nRegistration Fee: 120 € (covers participation\, course material and lunch) \nThe FIRElinks COST Action provides scholarships for excellent young researchers. The awardees will be selected based on their abstract and the CV. \nMaximal participation: 25 \nApplication procedure:\nPlease send the application with\n– your curriculum vitae (CV) and\n– an abstract (1 page\, 12 pt) explaining:\na) Why do you want to participate?\nb) What do you expect to get out?\nc) How will you use the information and experience that you gain? \nto: cost.summerschool@gmail.com \nAt the meeting the own research shall be presented within a 20 min- talk[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1581864833072{margin-bottom: 20px !important;}”]Download the training school flyer.[/vc_column_text][vc_tta_tour][vc_tta_section title=”Sunday\, March 29″ tab_id=”1562497423697-09138465-05b2″][vc_column_text]18:00 registration\, and short tour through Seville[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Monday\, March 30″ tab_id=”1562497423722-b3965eb0-0bf6″][vc_column_text]9h00-13h30:\n– Welcome and organization of workgroups\n– Introduction: What is FireLinks? (Artemi Cerda\, Chair of Firelinks)\n– Effect of Fire on the C/N cycling in soils? (presentations by Kajar Köster (Finnland) and Heike Knicker (Spain)\n– Stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry (Jose Antonio Gonzalez Perez)\n– Introduction into analytical pyrolysis\, FTIR (Jose Maria de la Rosa)\n13h30-14h30: lunch\n14h30- 18h00:\n– solid-state NMR spectroscopy (Heike Knicker)\nGroupwork: Design of a project “Determination of parameters that are necessary to evaluate the impact of fire on soils” created by the student\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Tuesday\, April 1″ tab_id=”1577692670062-6861b4ca-01d7″][vc_column_text]9h00-13h30:\n– Understanding the impact of wildfires on soil-vegetation dynamics\, hydrological and erosional processes (Lea Wittenberg)\n– Student presentation\n13h30-14h30: lunch\n14h30- 18h00: Lab work (in groups):\n1. basic soil parameters\n2. How to use FT/IR\n3. Introduction into analytical pyrolysis\, stable isotopes mass spectrometry\n4. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Wednesday\, April 2″ tab_id=”1577692683779-93603a14-9268″][vc_column_text]9h00-13h30: Field trip: After Fire-management: Examples in the Sierra de Aznalcollar\n13h30-14h30: lunch\n14h30- 18h00:\nStudent presentations\nFire as part of ecological systems or to reduce negative impacts of fire (Artemi Cerda)\nDiscussion about Fire-management\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Thursday\, April 3″ tab_id=”1581864604225-3df55d47-fdcb”][vc_column_text]9h00-13h30: Lab work (in groups)\n1. basic soil parameters\n2. It`s is a “man-made” fire that went out of control. At the same time there is a big demonstration “Friday for future” and a big conference called “Fire as a natural element of ecosystems”. There will be journalists\, politicians\, specialists and affected civilians.\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tour][/vc_column][/vc_row]
