WG1 will focus on assessing climate, weather and fire dynamics, and the root causes of fire and the fire behaviour that results and will use this knowledge to manage/fight extreme wildland fires more efficiently. In order to achieve this, information from different disciplines and long-term landscape planning is needed. New approaches in firefighting based on system knowledge that should be acquired from interacting with specialists on ecology (WG2), soil (WG3), water and sediment fluxes (WG4) and are needed. The climatic conditions, forest management and the socio-economic conditions (WG5) need to be fully taken understand fire dynamics and fire behaviour to transform into new and more effective firefighting.
